Mar. 30, 2010 : Summer Cover Crop Workshop

A new summer cover crop project is seeking to help organic vegetable growers more easily and effectively use summer cover crops in their systems - and thus reap the many soil, weed, and pest management benefits these crops can provide. The project is focusing on buckwheat, mustard, and sorghum-sudan, but we'll survey all the diverse summer cover crops available and discuss which of these might be most beneficial for growers on Long Island.

Sandy Menasha will also report on her recent and upcoming work with using mustard cover crops to improve crop quality and manage soil-borne pests and pathogens in cucurbit crops.

We'll also explore the possibility of developing local cover crop seed production for the area - thus, substantially reducing the difficulty and cost of sourcing cover crop seed. The project can provide substantial support to growers interested in growing cover crop seed.

This workshop is co-sponsored by Cornell Cooperative extension of Suffolk County and NOFA-NY and is funded, in part, by the USDA Organic Research and Education Initiative.

The workshop will be held in the 1st floor meeting room, at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Education Center at 423 Griffing Avenue, Riverhead, NY.

For more information, please contact Sandy Menasha (srm45@cornell.edu, 631-727-7850 ext. 316) or Elizabeth Dyck (organicseed@nofany.org, 607 895 6913).
