------

March 23 • 9:30 am - 12:30 pm
Spring Professional Development Series
Mean Kids: What adults need to know about bullying
The mean streets of past generations have moved offline and online: in school hallways, on social networking sites and in cell texts and images. The consequences of bullying, cyberbullying, relational aggression and other forms of peer abuse are severe for both victims and victimizers. This workshop will explore the many ways peer meanness is manifested, what research tells us about bullying and how adults can help the bullied, the bullies and the bystanders. Educator: Tim Jahn
Cornell Cooperative Extension, Riverhead • $25 • 631-727-7850, ext. 340

------

April 7 • 9:30 am - 12:30 pm
Spring Professional Development Series
Why Young Children Behave the Way They Do
During this training the developmental tasks of early childhood (birth-five years) will be reviewed. The concept of temperament will also be introduced. We will explore how both development and temperament may influence a child's behavior; explaining some of those confusing or challenging behaviors adults sometimes see in young children. Educator: Kerri Kreh Reda
Cornell Cooperative Extension, Riverhead • $25 • 631-727-7850, ext. 340

------

April 28 • 9:30 am - 12:30 pm
Spring Professional Development Series
Generation M2: Are you worried about kids who are wired?
According to a just released research report from the Kaiser Family Foundation, young people ages 8-18 spend more than 10 hours daily with various kinds of media, most of it electronic. While the risks of media overexposure haven't diminished, the kinds of media and the ways young people use media have changed significantly in the past decade. This workshop will examine the ramifications of the Kaiser study, other research on media use in children and teens, and how adults can help reduce risks of media through media literacy. Educator: Tim Jahn
Cornell Cooperative Extension, Riverhead • $25 • 625-727-7850, ext. 340

------

May 6 and 20 • 9:30 am - 3:30 pm
Discipline is Not a Dirty Word
Do the parents you work with need help understanding how to teach their children to act appropriately? This training will examine positive discipline and introduce seven principles of effective child guidance. Through examples, exercises and discussion, parent educators will learn new skills they can share with parents and families. This curriculum is most appropriate for parents and caregivers of children ages 2-10. Discussion will include working with parents effectively, "hot topics" for parents at different ages/stages and useful resources in parent education. Participants must attend both training days
Educator: Nancy Olsen-Harbich
$75, includes curriculum (lunch on your own)

Often children who are angry, especially those who are explosive, can make teachers, parents, child care providers and other adults feel helpless and inadequate. Learn about anger in children, the consequences of uncontrolled anger and ways adults can cope with angry children and help kids acquire better coping skills and develop emotional intelligence. Educator: Tim Jahn
Cornell Cooperative Extension, Riverhead • $25 • 631-727-7850, ext. 340

Participants will receive ideas for teaching basic nutrition concepts as well as quick and easy ways to incorporate physical activity into the daily routines of young children. Educator: Alysa Ferguson
Cornell Cooperative Extension, Riverhead • $25 • 631-727-7850, ext. 340

Mar. 30, 2010 : Summer Cover Crop Workshop

A new summer cover crop project is seeking to help organic vegetable growers more easily and effectively use summer cover crops in their systems - and thus reap the many soil, weed, and pest management benefits these crops can provide. The project is focusing on buckwheat, mustard, and sorghum-sudan, but we'll survey all the diverse summer cover crops available and discuss which of these might be most beneficial for growers on Long Island.

Sandy Menasha will also report on her recent and upcoming work with using mustard cover crops to improve crop quality and manage soil-borne pests and pathogens in cucurbit crops.

We'll also explore the possibility of developing local cover crop seed production for the area - thus, substantially reducing the difficulty and cost of sourcing cover crop seed. The project can provide substantial support to growers interested in growing cover crop seed.

This workshop is co-sponsored by Cornell Cooperative extension of Suffolk County and NOFA-NY and is funded, in part, by the USDA Organic Research and Education Initiative.

The workshop will be held in the 1st floor meeting room, at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Education Center at 423 Griffing Avenue, Riverhead, NY.

For more information, please contact Sandy Menasha (srm45@cornell.edu, 631-727-7850 ext. 316) or Elizabeth Dyck (organicseed@nofany.org, 607 895 6913).
