The Merry Merfolk Parade will take place during Greenport Maritime Festival on Saturday, September 23 at 11am.
A goal of the event is to raise awareness of marine habitat, specifically eelgrass meadows, where our local sea creatures reside. This essential habitat serves as nursery, spawning, and foraging grounds for a wide variety of finfish, shellfish, and merfolk!
Following the parade, there will be a best costume award ceremony in Mitchell Park in different categories. Awards for most creative, most frightening, most imaginative, most literary, etc. This year’s judges are Mary Bess Phillips, Village of Greenport Trustee, Al Krupski, Suffolk County Legislator, Chris Pickerell, Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program Director, and Nick Krupski, Southold Town Trustee.
Once awards have been distributed, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County will be holding a Marine Meadows Program Workshop in Mitchell Park, which will engage the public in CCE’s efforts to bring back populations of eelgrass to our local waters.
Participants will be able to help weave live shoots of
eelgrass into burlap planting units, which will then be deployed by CCE
