Understanding Plant Allergens in the Landscape: Tips on Avoiding and Designing with Allergies in Mind

Participants will learn about the different ways that landscape plantings and weeds can provoke allergic reactions. Specific plants and the type of allergic reactions they provoke, the best alternatives for less allergenic plantings, which plants are needlessly blamed for allergies, and best strategies if you encounter a plant allergen and more will be discussed.

Learning objectives:

  1. What parts of plants are allergenic.
  2. Design tips to create a hypoallergenic environment- as best as can be achieved outdoors.
  3. Alternative plant selections to consider near the house.

Meet the Presenter

Dr. Tamson Yeh is the Pest Management and Turf Specialist for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County and has energetically served the Long Island horticulture industry for over 15 years.Tamson has an extensive and diverse educational background with degrees in biology, animal and veterinary science, and a doctorate and post doctorate work in turfgrass science with specialization in biological control of turfgrass insects and nematology.She is considered armed and dangerous if seen with a soil probe.
