Compost and Soil Amendments

Applying compost and other organic materials to farm fields is an age-old practice,
but recent growing public awareness of the importance of recycling organic waste and building
healthy soil has translated into increased use of compost and other soil amendments. Mark
Hutchinson, Extension Educator at the University of Maine, will discuss materials for
composting, compost methods, quality of finished compost, and using compost at the farm
scale. Olga Vargas, Amy Langner, and Liz Camps, USDA-NRCS, will present on identifying soils
that could benefit from soil carbon amendments, the new soil carbon amendment standard
approved for NYS, as well as cost-share programs that encourage the application of compost
and other organic materials.
