Case Study: Caumsett State Historic Park 30-acre Grassland Restoration Project

Sue Feustel, The Caumsett Foundation Environmental Chairperson

Description: Motivated by a decline in grassland birds at Caumsett State Park in 2010, the NYS Park Regional LI Environmental Office and The Caumsett Foundation combined forces to provide the habitat for grassland dependent species with the goal of increasing biodiversity. Five years later a 30-acre site was seeded with warm season grasses and forbs and today hosts migratory grassland birds including Bobolink, Eastern Meadowlark and Northern Harrier. This program will describe the process used over a 4-year period to convert a mostly woody, invasive-dominated landscape into a warm-season grassland site. The presentation will include managerial strategies, dilemmas, problems encountered, and solutions.
