Ornamental Landscape Webinar Series: Short- and Long-term Effects of Transplanting Practices

There will be two presentations. The first presentation will consist of 30 minutes of lecture and 10 minutes of Q&A. The second presentation will consist of 15 minutes of lecture followed by a 30-minute panel discussion with Dr. Bayer and Mr. Cahilly.

Root Ball Preparation Impact on Landscape Shrub Establishment

Amanda Bayer, PhD., Extension Assistant Professor, UMass Amherst

Landscape plant success and establishment starts at planting. The presentation will discuss a two-year study at the University of Massachusetts looking at the impact of root ball preparation technique on establishment of three native and three non-native shrubs. Preparation techniques included root ball shaving and removal of growing media.

A Tree’s Response to Physical Constrictions

A. Wayne Cahilly, Cahilly’s Horticultural Services, LLC.

In a 15-minute presentation, Wayne will review some of the long-term implications of constrictions caused by enveloped guy-wires, poly string, and other supports and decorative remnants that have been forgotten.He will address the physiological response of these constrictions by various tree species.

Mr. Cahilly andDr. Bayer will discuss issues with poor transplanting practices and the implications on establishment and vigor. Participation from attendees will be encouraged (mics will be unmuted to allow for better audience participation).
