FDA officials including Commissioner Margaret Hamburg and Deputy Commissioner Michael Taylor toured several East Ends farms to discuss new food safety regulations with farmers. The Food Safety Modernization Act, signed by President Obama in early 2011, is a source of concern for some farmers who are unsure how the new laws will impact them. Representatives from the USDA, Congressman Tim Bishop, State Assemblyman Fred Thiele and County Legislators Ed Romaine and DuWayne Gregory also joined the tour and met with farmers who asked that the special needs of small farms be considered while these laws are drafted. Here is Newsday's take on the issue: http://www.newsday.com/opinion/fda-should-consider-small-farms-1.3091354
