Animal Care Technician - FARM

Animal Care Technician, Suffolk County Farm, Yaphank, NY

Position Summary:

Responsible for the daily feeding of the farm livestock, and the cleaning and maintenance of their living areas with the use of heavy equipment and hand held power tools. Adhere to farm manure and pasture management plan (scraping of beef lot, spreading of manure on fields, maintenance of pastures and grasslands). May occasionally assist in the delivery of animal sciences educational programs for youth and adults, as requested. Acts as liaison between the visiting public and the farm administration, especially on weekends. Adheres to farm safety plan.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent education.
  • Ability to build working relationships to solve problems and achieve common goals and work effectively and cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including, but not limited to, lifting fifty (50) pound bags of feed and bales of hay. Push full wheel barrels, and carry 5 gallon (40 lb.) water buckets and feed to animals over uneven terrain, ice, mud. Must be able to catch and restrain large (1000 lb.) animals and have the stamina to hold up horse legs while performing hoof care, restrain goats and sheep for hoof care, deworming and clipping and/or shearing. Move 200 lb. market hogs onto trailers.Move 500 lb. hog sows in farrowing house. Repair fences and move calf hutches.
  • Must be capable of climbing into the squeeze chute and over fences.
  • Must have the ability to safely operate hand-held power tools and heavy equipment (some operable using hand and foot pedals) i.e. tractors, skidsteer/bobcat, manure spreader etc.
  • Ability to complete tasks outdoors in all types of weather (snow, sleet, ice, rain, heat) i.e.: raking, shoveling, carrying feed and water buckets to animals, climbing, lifting, etc. over slippery, muddy, icy terrain
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, inclement weather, (snow, sleet, and ice storms) weekends, holidays and evening hours, as needed;
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Meet acceptable background check standard, if required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2 years of experience working on a farm, including the operation of heavy equipment.
  • Working knowledge of cattle and chute system.

Salary Range: $14.22 per hour

Hours: 20 hours per week
