Finance Director

Position Summary:

The Finance Director provides high level leadership and management of the financial operations for the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County (CCE-SC). Under the supervision of the Suffolk County Executive Director, the position develops and maintains effective working relationships among the Leadership and staff within CCE-SC. This position works in conjunction with Extension Administration Finance and Finance Leads from across New York State to lead the financial operation of the Association to its optimal state.The Finance Director exercises professional judgment, discretion, and confidentiality in oversight of the financial operations, provides leadership to implement systems-wide initiatives, and remains consistent with Extension Administration guidance. The person in this position will be supervised by the Association Executive Director. The position involves diversified duties requiring an intensive knowledge of a job or work area and requires the use of judgment in analyzing facts and circumstances surrounding work situations, problems, or transactions and in determining action to be taken within the limits of standard accepted policies.

Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Recommend short and long term financial modification with the goal of improving efficiencies where necessary.
  • Identify financial issues in Association and strategies for addressing them.
  • Orient and train Association finance staff.
  • Ensure a systematic approach to effective financial management
  • Provide reports and expertise for Association Board and Executive Director as requested
  • Work closely with the Senior Administrator and Executive Director, Extension Educators and Board of Directors on financial analysis, reporting and developing Association and grant budgets

This position will also be responsible for financial management duties in direct support of Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Suffolk County to include, but not limited to: budgeting, completing complex projects and reports, investments, etc.This position will provide high level assistance to the Executive Director and or have primary responsibility for decision-making regarding the Association budget and related financial areas, including management of accounting staff members. This position often answers policy questions according to established financial guidelines, advising the Executive Director of problems. This position influences and assists in financial decision making. This position will be located in Suffolk County, New York.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent Education (Associate’s Degree and 2 years of program/functional experience).
  • Two (2) years of experience working in an advanced Finance Management role delivering high-level Finance support and services.
  • Experience to include complex budget preparation and management, accounts receivable/payable tracking, expense/revenue tracking, cash flow tracking, reconciliation, reporting, compliance, and grants/contracts management.
  • Previous work with ACCPAC and non‐profit accounting.
  • Knowledge of FASB (Financial Accounting Standards Board) and GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) Standards.
  • Excellent computer skills and demonstrated ability to utilize technology, specifically computer finance programs, database systems, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide training and training materials using various techniques and technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgement, discretion and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with staff to provide excellent customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well both in a team setting and independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, organize, and implement established goals.
  • Demonstrated effective and professional oral, written, and visual communications skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and maintain involved records and reports.
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License and the ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to meet acceptable background check standards, (criminal background check and motor vehicle check).
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or similar area of study.
  • Five (5) years of experience in an advanced Finance Management role delivering high-level finance support, services, and finance/system administration (i.e., ACPACC).
  • Familiarity with the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) System
