LI Shellfish Restoration Field Technician - Riverhead, NY

Position Summary:

The primary purpose of this position is assistance for the LI Shellfish Restoration Program. This position will assist with conducting field work focusing on shellfish husbandry including the maintenance and operation of floating upweller systems (FLUPSY’s) as well as one or more bottom planted beds and deployment of spat on shell at multiple sites throughout Long Island.Other work will include the use of motor vehicles and boats (as necessary), use of manual and electric hand tools and maintenance and repair of equipment all in support of the growing, handling, monitoring and planting of shellfish in Long Island waters. This position will be accountable to the Resource Educator (LI Shellfish Restoration Project Manager). The general nature of this position will be to act under direct supervision and not with a great deal of independence. Program assistance as a team member is the primary effort in this position.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma and 2 years volunteer or work experience.

  • Ability, or willingness to learn timecard software.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to meet acceptable background check standards, if required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License.
  • Ability to pass Motor Vehicle Screen process.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree or Equivalent Education in environmental sciences, hydrology, natural resource management, engineering, or other related field.
  • Experience working with hand held water quality monitoring devices.
  • Experience handling shellfish.
  • Experience using (GIS) Geographic Information Systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Administrative Responsibilities:

Coordination/Operation – 95%

  • Maintain shellfish nursery sites (FLUPSY, in-bottom and others) throughout Long Island in support of the overall shellfish restoration program.
  • Help deliver and deploy various shellfish nursery equipment and materials to field sites throughout Long Island to prepare and maintain shellfish nursery systems (FLUPSY, in-bottom and others).
  • Use an association vehicle and/or an association vessel to gain access to the nursery sites.
  • Interact with project volunteers to conduct FLUPSY maintenance and data collection. Represent the Association before the public, community leaders and Cornell or other land grant universities as part of program delivery..
  • Collect, organize and format research data using established databases.
  • Assist supervisor in tracking the growth and development of shellfish grown throughout Long Island using standard methods involving size, volume and other appropriate parameters.
  • Assist with routine collection of field data relative to water quality (WQ) tests (e.g. salinity, nutrients, temp., etc.) and assisting with the processing of samples in the laboratory (e.g., sediments) as necessary.
  • Perform basic data analysis, under the guidance and supervision of Supervisor.

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

This is a non-exempt, full-time position, 40 hours per week. – Two positions available
