Vegetable/Potato Program Assistant Position Available

Seasonal Program Assistant needed for Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Suffolk County Vegetable and Potato Program based at the Long Island Horticulture Research and Extension Center, 3059 Sound Ave. in Riverhead.Starting date is May 2020 and ending date is flexible or September 30, 2020. Applicant must be able to work 8am-4:30pm Monday thru Friday.

Job Title: Seasonal Program Assistant

Salary: $13.00 -$14.00 depending on qualifications

Benefits:Medical benefits only, if duration is over three months

Other:Position is full time, temporary employment

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Maintenance of research trials on and off site
  2. Performs duties including but not limited to planting, weeding, harvesting and lifting of produce.
  3. Assist with data collection and entry
  4. Scout farms weekly for insects and diseases and communicate observations with growers
  5. Install and maintain a sweet corn pest trapping network
  6. Report pest occurrences and severity daily to Supervisor
  7. Maintain program files and records


  1. High School diploma or equivalency and 6 months volunteer or work experience
  2. Ability to work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather, performing various field activities
  3. Ability to understand and implement written and oral instruction
  4. Must be reliable and able to work independently as well as part of a team
  5. Ability to complete any given task in an efficient and timely manner
  6. Must be able to lift 20-50 lbs
  7. Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  8. Ability to meet the travel requirements associated with the position; Valid NYS driver’s license and personal vehicle for on-the-job transportation, 3 years driving experience and pass a motor vehicle screening. Mileage reimbursed at Federal rate.
