Sound Experiences: From Ship to Shore

The Marine Program has been working on some exciting projects this year, including phase II of Sound Experiences: From Ship to Shore.

Funded in 2006 and again in 2008 by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundations' Long Island Sound Futures Fund, this project enabled Marine Program staff in Western Suffolk to partner with The Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, and provided 26 free marine science field trips to 10 underserved school districts throughout Long Island.

From May through October 2008, over 475 students in grades 4 through 8 participated in this unique program. Each full-day field trip took place at The Waterfront Center, and offered students the opportunity to learn about the intertidal zone and the shallow waters of Oyster Bay.

On the beach, students had fun learning about local marine life by exploring the beach & salt marsh with Cornell Cooperative Extension educators.
