Project SOAR Mission Statement and Objectives

Stewards of America's Resources (Project SOAR) the Juvenile Day Reporting Center (JDRC) for Suffolk County is an alternative junior high and high school program for adjudicated youth 13-17 years of age. The objective of Project SOAR is to provide secondary education to at-risk youth as they would be learning in their home school districts, build confidence and skills using the local Long Island environment as a context for learning and to connect them with their communities and their environment.

Participation as a student in the JDRC program is not open to the general public but by careful selection by the Suffolk County Family Court system. Habitually violent and severe antisocial candidates are avoided.

The projects and classes offered by Project SOAR are not only intended to bring classroom studies to life, but to instill a work ethic and self confidence that may be missing in these students' lives. Our intention is to provide them with a number of tools that can facilitate their survival and success upon returning to their school districts and the outside world. Students that successfully complete the program receive full credit from their school districts in the subject areas that are covered. Those students that require community service hours may at times fulfill these in Project SOAR as well. Two social workers are on staff to provide service and support for the students, teachers and parents.
