The Pumpkin Fling, held at the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center in Yaphank, NY is Long Island's annual championship pumpkin catapult contest -- and a unique opportunity for students and adults to experience the joys and trials of designing, building and operating sophisticated mechanical devices. Teams in our Youth and Adult divisions build a catapult or other propulsion device to fling a 3-5 pound pumpkin into an open field. Whichever team chucks the farthest wins! Other awards include; Audience Favorite, Precision, and more. Thanks to L.K. McLean Associates for the use of their laser measurement equipment and to Tamara Stillman and Andrew Speiser for volunteering to read the measurements! Above are photos from the 2011 event!
