Brief Summary: The Sailing Instructor at Peconic Dunes 4-H Camp is responsible for implementing the camp's sailing curriculum. The curriculum consists of developmentally appropriate sailing skills, knowledge, attitudes and awareness. The Sailing Instructor will plan, organize, deliver and evaluate specific instruction for campers during 180-minute periods. The Sailing Instructor will utilize the existing P. Dunes sailing curriculum. Sailing instructors will work with co-instructors and the Waterfront Director to foster an interest and camp wide appreciation for the sport of sailing through activity "commercials", the creative use of activity periods, and assessments. Instructors will assess and maintain records for all participating campers.
Be available to attend and participate in All-Staff Training, and entire camp program. Be prepared to flexibly adapt to the diverse situations that arise at a co-ed, residential summer camp. Continuously reinforce policies and procedures found in the Peconic Dunes' Risk Management Manual. Speak and behave in a professional manner with staff, children, parents, visitors, et cetera, at all times. Support a community-oriented camp culture that emphasizes empathy, continuous improvement, and high performance. These duties are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties will be assigned as required.
Specific Responsibilities: All counselors at Peconic Dunes 4-H Camp serve as both cabin counselor (JC, SC or Unit Leader) and activity specialist (instructor, coordinator or program director). This "A" position description should be paired with a "B" position description.
Minimum Qualifications: Department of Health requires individuals to be 17 years of age or older for this position. One year of experience demonstrating responsibility with children. Once year of experience relating to sailing as a participant, teacher, and/or coach.
Preferred Qualifications: Pursuing a degree of study relating to education or activity area. Current instructor certification through US Sailing or equivalent. Current certification in American Red Cross CPR, First Aid and Lifeguard. One summer resident camp experience as a counselor/instructor. Two years of experience in a volunteer / community service organization.
Work Schedule: June 4 - August 18, 2012, 2 hours off/day, 1 day off/week
