Lead Campers, CITs and Counselors through specialized activities involving Animal Science. Supervise campers and ensure their safety at all times. Assist with day-to-day operations of the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center Camp programs. Directly interact with camper’s parents and guardians. Maintain camp facilities. Promote development of a community-oriented camp culture that emphasizes empathy, continuous improvement, and high performance.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 17 years old and have attended or graduated from high school or equivalent.
  • Ability to comply with Suffolk County Department of Health requirements.
  • Ability to understand and carry out educational program tasks and objectives.
  • Ability to work outdoors performing various types of educational and physical activities.
  • Ability to handle health and safety issues and/or emergency situations.
  • Paid or volunteer experience working with children and/or the public.
  • Have an appreciation and understanding of the natural environment.
  • Must be able to work for the full camp season. This includes training before camp and wrap up after camp has ended.
  • Must be able to work one before or after care shift each week.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to meet acceptable background check standards, if required.
  • Candidate must be able to work effectively with a wide range of diverse young people.
  • A positive and energetic attitude.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Attendance in or graduation from a recognized college/university or equivalent.
  • Additional education and training in the field of education.
  • Additional education in the areas of environmental science, horticulture, animal science, art education, music education, agriculture and/or natural science.
  • Some teaching experience.
  • Ability to assist with teaching and a keen interest in educating youth.
  • Leadership abilities.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Program Responsibilities:

Program Delivery – 80%

  • Deliver educational programs dealing with environmental science, horticulture, animal science and agriculture programs at the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Management – 5%

  • Lead CITs and Counselors through daily activities.
  • Supervise campers and ensure their safety at all times.
  • Lead campers through daily activities with a positive and fun attitude.

Coordination/Operation – 10%

  • Responsible for assisting with program set-up, material preparation, clean-up.
  • Assist in maintaining proper site appearance and safety conditions.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and trainings as scheduled/required.
  • Pursue personal growth through expanding personal knowledge of the total organization and through updating techniques and technical skills relating to the position.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
