Assist in teaching educational camp programs at the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center. Assist with day-to-day operations of the Diabetes Camp Program.

Required Qualifications:

  • Paid or volunteer experience working with children and/or the public.
  • Experience with diabetes education and/or issues related to the disease.
  • Must be at least 16 years old to comply with New York State Department of Health regulations.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional education and training in the field of education.
  • Additional education in the areas of environmental science, horticulture, animal science, agriculture and/or natural science.
  • Some teaching experience.
  • Ability to assist with teaching and a keen interest in educating youth.
  • Leadership abilities.
  • A positive and energetic attitude.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Program Responsibilities:
Program Delivery – 80%

  • Assist with teaching of classes with diabetes summer campers at the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center.

Administrative Responsibilities:
Management – 5%

  • Supervise campers and ensure their safety at all times.
  • Lead campers through daily activities with a positive and fun attitude.

Coordination/Operation – 10%

  • Responsible for assisting with program set-up, material preparation, clean-up.
  • Assist in maintaining proper site appearance and safety conditions.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar with and strive to follow applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

Salary: $20 per hour
