Provide first aid and emergency medical treatment for children enrolled in Diabetes Camp Summer Fun Days at the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduation for recognized high school or equivalent.
  • Current RN/LPN certification.
  • Licensed to practice in New York State.
  • Current insurance certificate for the duration of camp.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to respond to medical emergencies
  • Ability to assist children and staff experiencing an illness or injury.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing with children, parents, and staff.
  • Ability to educate youth about the equipment associated with administering diabetes medications.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Program Responsibilities:
Program Delivery – 10%

  • Providing education on managing diabetes, insulin equipment, and nutrition for managing diabetic issues.

Administrative Responsibilities:
Management – 5%

  • Teach the Farm Camp staff to respond appropriately in a medical emergency.
  • Manage Farm Camp staff to prevent accidents by working with them to ensure that the site, facilities, and equipment utilized in the program promote the safety of the children.

Coordination/Operation – 80%

  • Provide first aid and emergency medical treatment for the children enrolled in Diabetes Camp Summer Fun Days.
  • Review medical forms completed by parents for chronic illnesses, previous injuries, and known allergies.
  • Interview parents regarding their child’s particular health needs, as required.
  • Keep medications locked in the medicine cabinet and dispense as written by the child’s physician.
  • Work with the local medical personnel, including members of the volunteer ambulance and staff at the community hospital, to ensure a rapid response in the event of a serious accident at the Farm.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar with and strive to follow applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

POSITION DETAILS:

Salary: $23-28 per hour (30 hrs. per week)

Schedule: NON-EXEMPT – TEMP: July 15, 2024 – July 26, 2024
