We are excited to announce our 2022 Back to the Bays Lecture Series that will kick off on April 19 from 6-8pm at the GHB Peconic Location! @greenportbrew Beginning 4/19 and then the 1st Tuesday of each month for the rest of 2022, you can meet the Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Team and find out how you can get involved in important efforts to give back to the bays! We will have new lectures the first Tuesday of every month about the work of CCE Marine Program happening right at Cedar Beach in Southold! To promote our Back to the Bays Membership Program, if you join our program you will receive a complimentary beer to enjoy during the lecture! We are also looking to collaborate again on a kelp beer, host more events at this location this year, and more! Check out our stories to learn more! @ccemarineprogram

Greenport Harbor Brewing Company has been directly supporting our efforts since 2013. They have hosted several fundraising and awareness events in support of our work (Hops for Habitat, Marine Meadows Workshops, Kelp Aquaculture Art + Awareness Event), are proud sponsors of our annual Shellabration fundraiser, and have even brewed a beer (Sea Farm Porter) in support of our work that utilized kelp we harvested from our local waters.

Here is the lineup - (topics are subject to change):

  • October 4th Marine Meadows: This month, our own Marine Botany Specialist, Steve Schott and the Marine Meadows Habitat Restoration Team will be presenting on all things eelgrass and underwater habitat restoration. Along with Steve will be Marine Meadows Program Manager Kim Manzo and Back to the Bays Volunteer Coordinator Hazel Wodehouse who will talk about all that goes into bringing back our important marine meadows, and how YOU can get involved by participating in our restoration workshops this fall.

  • November 1st Local F.I.S.H.:  CCE Fisheries Specialist Kristin Gerbino will be presenting on our Local F.I.S.H. Initiative! Guests will learn all about the importance of choosing Fresh, Indigenous, Sustainable, Healthy local seafood and the many programs, cooking tutorials, and culinary events the CCE Fisheries Team puts on in support of this effort. Supporting and buying local seafood helps our economy, maritime heritage, and environment and there are many underutilized local species to try so come learn more and leave feeling inspired to become part of the Local F.I.S.H. movement.

  • December 6th Back to the Bays Initiative Status and Future!:  CCE Back to the Bays Initiative Director Kimberly Barbour will be providing an update on the success of the Initiative and a preview of what’s to come in 2023. Learn about the extensive habitat and shellfish restoration efforts that took place at the East End Back to the Bays Stewardship Sites this year and get excited for all the good things that are on the horizon for the year ahead. Back to the Bays Shellfish Coordinator Kate Rossi-Snook and Volunteer Coordinator Hazel Wodehouse will also be in attendance to provide information on how YOU can play an important role in this initiative year-round!
