  • Friday, September 16, 2022, 12:00 AM - Monday, October 10@ 12:00 AM

CCE Marine Program and Floyd Memorial Library Partner on Art Initiative and Fundraiser

September 16th marked the Artists Reception to celebrate “From Macroalgae to Marine Mammals”, an art exhibit showcasing original paintings of local coastal and marine plant and animal species created by CCE’s resident artist Carolyn Munaco. The exhibition was collaboratively organized by Carolyn Munaco and Kimberly Barbour at CCE Marine Program and Sally Grant, Art Exhibits Curator at Floyd Memorial Library.

The selection of work is from a collection of 250 pieces created for inclusion in CCE’s forthcoming “Long Island Coastal and Marine Field Guide”. Artwork is listed for sale with proceeds supporting the publication and printing and distribution of the guide; so far sales from the exhibit have cleared $5,000 which will directly support this project!

The public is invited to visit the exhibit that will be on view until October 10th at Floyd Memorial Library located at 539 First Street in Greenport Village. As an added fun element to the exhibit, the library, CCE and 5 local businesses are presenting a Field Guide Art Scavenger Hunt throughout the village. Participants can pick up entry forms at the library or any of the participation locations, and then visit each one and search for the 12x12 paintings of the featured species that are hidden inside the establishments. Scavenger hunt participants must then sketch and label the species they find and return their forms to the library by October 10th to be eligible to win some great prizes-including one of Carolyn Munaco’s original art pieces. Entries can be maximized by showing proof of purchase at the participating businesses which include First and South, One Love Beach, Greenport Brewery, Preston’s and Little Creek Oysters.

“Reaching our community through integrative art and science programming is something we’ve been expanding upon in recent years as it’s proven to be an effective way to educate and inspire the public to care about our local marine and coastal resources. The exhibit and scavenger hunt is a fun way to engage the public and we’re grateful to Floyd Memorial Library and our participating Greenport businesses for helping raise awareness and funds for our efforts,” noted Kim Barbour, CCE Marine Program Outreach Manager.

Tom Vitale, Director of the library stated: "Floyd Memorial Library is delighted to partner with Cornell Cooperative Marine Program and Carolyn Munaco as we move forward in our mission of serving the North Fork as a community center and premier arts library. This particular exhibition is imperative to our community's commitment to maritime science education and sustainability. The theme of the exhibit also directly supports this coming weekend's Maritime Festival in the heart of Greenport Village."
