DESCRIPTION: On Long Island, we depend on our groundwater for drinking water. But the nitrogen fertilizer we apply to our lawns - especially when the grass is dormant - can move down through the soil and pollute our aquifer. To protect Long Island's waters, Suffolk County Local Law No. 41-2007 was passed to reduce nitrogen pollution to our groundwater and surface waters through the overall reduction and better management of fertilizer applications. Elements of the law include a ban on applying fertilizer in Suffolk County from November 1 to April 1, an educational course requirement for lawn care professionals, and educational signs and brochures posted in fertilizer retail establishments. Fertilizer education opportunities For retailers, landscapers, and lawn care professionals Registration is closed.
