Aquaculture Intern, Northport, NY

Position Summary:

The Aquaculture Intern will work with Cornell Shellfish Biologist and Village staff on shellfish aquaculture and public education project at the Village Floating Upwelling System (FLUPSY) at Cow Harbor Park, Northport NY. Assist with the collection of scientific monitoring data for shellfish and water quality. Assist educators with providing general information for the public for outreach and education. Assist with maintenance and upkeep of FLUPSY.

Required Qualifications:

  • Village of Northport resident currently enrolled in High School or College.
  • Ability to drive
  • Ability to follow instructions carefully.
  • Ability to work with others or alone with some supervision.
  • Knowledge of natural science, plant science, or marine science.
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs. and handle heavy gear.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to meet acceptable background check standards, if required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a science or marine science concentration program with a local High School.
  • Familiarity with or experience in scientific sampling and marine science.

Salary: Non-exempt $15.12 per hour

Hour: Part-time 12- 20 hours per week

Date: July 5, 2022 – September 30, 2022

The paid internship will be offered from July 5th through August 27th. The positions are part-time 12-20 hours per week. During the start of the season, it is possible that training will occur at Goldstar Battalion Beach in Huntington and at times interns may be needed to start there day at Goldstar but finish their day in Northport.Orientation may be required prior to the start of the position. Depending on timing, this orientation may be virtual or held at the Riverhead or the Huntington office.
