Position Summary:

The Chief Communications Officer (CCO) reports to the Executive Director and is an experienced and skilled communication professional and a core member of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk’s (CCE-SC) Marketing and Communications team. The CCO will strategize, build, and execute a communications strategy for CCE-SC. Including external messaging, employee communication, social media content development, crafting briefing materials, speechwriting, developing campus-wide messaging and creating thought leadership content including opinion pieces to inform and educate, which align with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk’s (CCE-SC) mission, vision and priorities.The CCO must work comfortably and confidentially with top administrators in all areas of the Association and be available to respond to critical requests for information in short timeframes while juggling multiple priorities.

The CCO will proactively drive the daily messaging agenda of the Executive Director, maintaining a thorough understanding of current priorities, creating a cadence of deliverables, and working to improve upon strategies, practices, and policy. This will be achieved by staying up to date on CCE-SC activities, current events, and trends.Assisting with operations and policy development processes to provide timely, consistent messaging across multiple communication. Excellent judgment, as well as accuracy and care in the dissemination of information, is critical. The CCO will also support crisis communication messaging and strategy as needed. The ability to work independently and multi-task in a fast-paced environment and respond quickly and professionally under pressure are also essential for this role. The CCO must have excellent written, interpersonal, and verbal communications skills.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, or related field.
  • Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in executive communications for a CEO or senior leader in a corporation, government, or non-profit organization.
  • Highly developed strategic and critical thinking to identify and align issues with organizational priorities
  • Work well in a team setting and independently.
  • Judgment, discretion, and confidentiality are critical to this position.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with different audiences.
  • Must be able to work professionally and collegially with colleagues at the local Association level and Extension Administration.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Must have access to transportation to meet position responsibilities.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
  • Additional years (7+) of progressively responsible experience in executive communications for a CEO or senior leader in a corporation, government, or non-profit organization.
  • Experience working with social media platforms in creating and implementing programs.
  • Experience developing thought leadership opportunities and content.
  • Familiarity with CCE (Cornell Cooperative Extension) system.
