Grape Program Assistant Position Available

Seasonal Program Assistant needed for Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Suffolk County Grape Program based at the Long Island Horticulture Research and Extension Center, 3059 Sound Ave. in Riverhead. Starting date is May 2023 and ending date is late August.

Applicant must be able to work 8am-4:30pm Monday thru Friday. If funding allows, there is a possibility of extending the job into the fall.

Job Title: Seasonal Program Assistant

Salary: $16.05 per hour, 35-40 hours per week

Benefits: Medical benefits only if duration is over three months

Other: Position is full time, temporary employment

Job Responsibilities:

Assist with maintenance of vineyard at LIHREC including canopy management activities, weeding, cluster thinning, adjusting trellis wires, deploying bird netting, etc.
Assist with implementation and maintenance of research trials off site.
Performs duties including but not limited to planting, weeding, harvesting.
Leaf tissue and soil sampling.
Assist with data collection and data entry.

Qualifications:

High School diploma or equivalency and 6 months volunteer or work experience
Ability to work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather, performing various physical farm and field activities.
Ability to understand and implement written and oral instruction.
Must be reliable, a team player, and able to work independently .
Ability to complete any given task in an efficient and timely manner.
Attention to detail and good observational skills.
Must be able to lift 20-50 lbs.
Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
