Nutrition Educator, Long Island, NY

POSITION SUMMARY:

Implement public education to improve healthy food and lifestyle choices among limited-resource families and individuals encompassing all age groups throughout Suffolk County, emphasizing the northern portion of Suffolk County and surrounding areas. This includes presenting a series of 6 to 8 English and Spanish, Mandarin, or Creole lessons that focus on general nutrition, food preparation, food safety, and food budgeting. Nutrition education may take place at County agencies or in participant homes. Recruitment of participants is also included as part of the workday. Collect and Manage participant data, always ensuring confidentiality.

This is a grant-funded position. Funding for the program is through the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) as part of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), an agency within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree and one year of volunteer or work-related experience
  • Proficiency with windows-based software, including use of the internet and navigation with various browsers, and Microsoft Office proficiency, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Publisher.
  • Ability to meet the travel requirements of the position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and occasional overnight travel.
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish, Mandarin or Creole)
  • Ability to carry supplies and equipment.
  • The ability to converse in English.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Nutrition-related knowledge/experience/background preferred
  • Must be comfortable purchasing and preparing foods and reviewing and following recipes
  • Experience in adult and youth education or other relevant work experience
  • Familiarity with the community in which the work will take place
  • Experience working with the target audience (a limited resource)
  • Ability to present effective and relevant educational lessons to target audiences (one-on-one and group) and work with diverse audiences of all ages
  • Ability and willingness to work with diverse audiences and maintain cultural sensitivity
  • Good judgment and problem-solving skills and ability to keep the information confidential
  • Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the immediate supervisor
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team

POSITION DETAILS:

Salary: $20.00 - $21.00 per hour

Schedule: Non-exempt (30 hours per week)
