new sea star (2)  Marine Ecosystems Week

NEW! An all new themed session has come to our shores! Your child will enjoy learning about different marine ecosystems throughout the world. We will circle back to our local shore with a BRAND NEW unique field trip: where we will visit Stony Brook’s Marine Center in Southampton! While aboard the 45’ R/V Peconic, campers will explore the waters of the Shinnecock Bay. Campers will be given an opportunity to use the same instruments used by researchers to collect water and bottom samples, and compare two locations to hypothesize what would cause any differences. After sampling water and bottom sediments, they will deploy an otter trawl. An otter trawl is a large fish net that has two wooden “doors” attached at the front of the net. As the boat drags the net through the water, the doors cause the mouth of the net to open, allowing us to collect many types of flora and fauna that call the shallow waters of the bay home. All specimens collected are transferred to an onboard touch tank, where passengers will be able to handle the organisms, while a naturalist will discuss interesting facts about each of the specimens. Two trawls will be performed, each in a different habitat, allowing us to compare the differences between the two. All sessions consist of guided nature walks through the Fuchs Pond Preserve, where campers will explore our coastal woodlands and freshwater pond and get a chance to collect and observe these wonderful creatures. Campers will also enjoy a trip to Northport’s local Asharoken Beach where campers will experience seining, beach games and swimming.

CIT Program

Is your teenager interested in marine science and working with younger children? This program is designed to give them a week-long summer experience where they discover both areas! Our Counselor-in Training (CIT) program will afford your child the chance to participate in our camp while assisting counselors in working with younger campers as they do marine related crafts, marine science lessons, activities, seining, live marine creature handling, and games. CITs will also help counselors prepare activities/games, learn how to supervise younger campers, be involved in lesson planning, and help in the "behind the scenes" daily activities of camp operation (including animal care/feeding and tank maintenance).*Each session runs Monday-Friday (8:30 AM - 2:30 PM)*Participation hours in this program can count towards community service hours for programs such as National Honor Society, graduation requirements, etc.Interested? Here are your next steps:

In order to be accepted into this program, you must contact Alexandra Stevens before registering here online: ams838@cornell.edu *It is highly recommended that the interested CIT (not the parent) contacts the Camp Director before registering him or her online. Each CIT candidate registered will need to meet and interview with the Camp Director prior to the start of camp for acceptance into the program. This registration will include at least one training day during the week of June 20th. Details will be provided via email by June. This will be mandatory for all staff and participants in the CIT Program sessions.

Student Paced:
Can’t make it for our live sessions, no problem! We also have a student-paced camp where you can complete lessons, crafts, and virtual field trips on your own throughout the entire summer.
Student-Paced : Learn how to tell apart some of the most commonly confused animals in the ocean, then learn about some of the largest ocean animals alive today, and finally, grab a magnifying glass to learn about plankton in the ocean and how some of the largest ocean predators started their lives as plankton (and so much more)!Your camper will also be provided a Sea Stars Marine Cyber Camp Survivor Kit. What’s included?

  • craft supplies
  • guides
  • camp T-shirt
