Join us this weekend on Shelter Island for our Marine Meadows Workshop, where we’ll be bringing adult eelgrass shoots to shore for processing into our biodegradable burlap planting units. Once stocked, these eelgrass “tortillas” will be planted at our restoration sites by our Dive Team.
Eelgrass provides essential habitat for finfish and shellfish and helps improve water quality and coastal resiliency of our shoreline. This seagrass has been in decline for decades. There has been an 85% loss on Long Island since 1930 due to many reasons, including a severe algal bloom called brown tide that took place in the 1980’s. Thanks to our hardworking team and dedicated community members, we’re on our way to restoring our vital eelgrass habitat!
