Identification & Pruning of Woody Ornamentals

Description: Folks new to horticulture and landscape management are welcome and encouraged to participate in this full-day workshop that will cover identification and pruning of woody trees and shrubs. This workshop is designed to supplement study for landscape professionals interested in becoming a Certified Nursery & Landscape Professional (CNLP) and is session 5 as part of the CNLP Exam Review Course. The morning session consists of three presentations in the greenhouse classroom.

Woody Plant Identification

Vincent Simeone, Planting Fields Arboretum

Vincent will review leaf morphology, branch arrangement, and other plant traits for identification of woody plants. An introduction to using a dichotomous key will be reviewed.

9:40 to 9:50 Stretch Break
9:50 to 10:50 AM

Ornamental Plant Selection of Woody & Herbaceous Plants

Vincent Simeone, Planting Fields Arboretum

Vincent will discuss selection of ornamental plants well-suited for Long Island with an emphasis on the right plant for the right site.

10:50 AM to 11:50 AM

Introduction to Pruning of Woody Plants

Joseph Patrone, Hofstra University

Joseph will provide a review on the importance of pruning, necessary equipment, timing and frequency, and pruning techniques of deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs.

11:50 to 1 PM Break for pizza and salad lunch.

AFTERNOON OUTDOOR SESSIONS

1:00 PM to 2:30 PM

Woody Plant Walk & Talk ID

Richard Weir, Horticulture Solutions

Richard will conduct a field tour that will focus on plant identifying features of woody plants. He will discuss woody plants well-suited for Long Island landscapes.

What, When, and How Much to Prune & When to Walk Away

Joseph Patrone, Hofstra University

Joseph will use the trees of Planting Fields Arboretum to show effective pruning strategies and what happens when pruning is overlooked.
