Each day of Sea Stars Marine Camp is packed with hands-on activities, outdoor games, exciting arts & crafts and fun educational lessons about the environment! Week-long sessions are designed to immerse campers into the world of marine science through hands-on learning experiences! At the Camp Center, campers will observe and handle live marine animals and freshwater pond-life while learning about marine biology and environmental ecology. Every session is unique and will provide your camper with different marine science topics.

Whether your child is passionate about marine biology or just wants to know more about Long Island’s fascinating marine wildlife, this camp is the perfect experience. Please see session descriptions for specifics about the theme and possible field trips!

Sessions run from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM (unless otherwise stated)

SSMC Sea Trekkers

Sea Trekkers

All the fun of Sea Stars Marine Camp with an educational and exciting approach to fishing! Your child will enjoy a fishing expedition aboard Captree’s Yankee III Fishing Vessel, whose Captain will show your camper all they need to know about knot tying, boat safety, conservation and much more! We will also see what life we can find during bottom dredges! Campers will enjoy a full day of fishing on the south shore of LI. First timers are welcome! Back on land, at the Camp Center, campers will observe and handle live marine animals and freshwater pond-life; while learning about marine science and environmental ecology, fish ID, equipment care, conservation, and much more! Before the week is over, your child will show great improvement in their fishing abilities along with an increased knowledge of our local waters and what’s living in it. All sessions consist of guided nature walks through the Fuchs Pond Preserve, where campers will explore our coastal woodlands and freshwater pond and get a chance to collect and observe these wonderful creatures. Campers will also enjoy a trip to Sunken Meadow State Park's salt marsh where campers will experience seining and interact with local marine life with our on staff Marine Biologist!

SSMC Aquatic Investigators

Aquatic Investigators

Get ready to kick up the aquatic biology fun a few notches! Whether your child is passionate about marine biology or just loves Long Island’s great outdoors, this course is a great introduction. This week is designed to immerse our older campers into the world of aquatic science through hands-on learning experiences! The program will introduce campers to sampling and research techniques used by biologists, survey skills, and marsh sampling for aquatic invertebrates and plankton. This week will also lead campers through an exciting fishing expedition aboard Captree’s Yankee III Fishing Vessel! Campers will learn all they need to know about fishing, boat safety, local fish biology and conservation! Our Captain will also lead us through an exciting bottom dredge where campers will investigate other local marine invertebrates! In addition, our investigators will experience a trip to Sunken Meadow State Park's salt marsh where campers will experience seining and interact with local marine life with our on staff Marine Biologist!

SSMC Shark Week

Shark Week

All the fun of Sea Stars Marine Camp with a focus on Sharks! Your child will explore the biology and ecology of these fascinating and misunderstood keystone predators. Through hands-on activities, campers will learn fun facts about sharks’ lives from their diets and teeth, to their habitats and conservation efforts. It will also include a trip to the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead where campers are guided in small groups through the exhibits by educators. All sessions consist of guided nature walks through the Fuchs Pond Preserve, campers will explore our coastal woodlands and freshwater pond and get a chance to collect and observe these wonderful creatures. Campers will also enjoy a trip to Sunken Meadow State Park's salt marsh where campers will experience seining and interact with local marine life with our on staff Marine Biologist!

Shark Week Session 3 runs from 9am-2pm. (Daily Drop-off/pick-up at Fuchs Pond Preserve)

Marine Ecosystems Week

Let’s explore our shores! Your child will enjoy learning about different marine ecosystems throughout the world. We will circle back to our local shore with a BRAND NEW unique in-person visitors: from the CSH Whaling Museum. Our younger cohort will learn about the fascinating lives of 19th century whalers and the importance of whaling in American history, especially on Long Island. Students learn the how, why, and when of whale hunting, touch authentic nautical artifacts used on whaling ships, and understand the need for whale conservation today. The older cohort will explore whaling on LI and beyond. These campers will deepen their perspective of how the whaling industry shaped communities, while inspiring the globe's first environmental movement. All sessions consist of guided nature walks through the Fuchs Pond Preserve, where campers will explore our coastal woodlands and freshwater pond and get a chance to collect and observe these wonderful creatures. Campers will also enjoy a trip to Sunken Meadow State Park's salt marsh where campers will experience seining and interact with local marine life with our on staff Marine Biologist!

undefined  Naturalist Week

This new course offers campers an introduction to Long Island’s natural world. This week will take advantage, more so than ever before, of the beautiful preserve where camp is held. Naturalist Week is designed to immerse your child’s passion for ponds, trails, forest, local wildlife that can be found in the streams, air, trees and more. This program will cover nature walks to Fuchs Pond Preserve, kicked up a few notches…we will identify plant and bird life (and everything in-between) along the way. We will collect macroinvertebrates found in the pond, to better understand the water quality of Fuchs Pond. This session will help your child understand how land and sea are interconnected, understanding the full scope of Long Island’s wild and marine life! Campers will also enjoy a trip to Sunken Meadow State Park's salt marsh where campers will experience seining and interact with local marine life with our on staff Marine Biologist!

Naturalist Week Session 7 runs from 9am-2pm. (Daily Drop-off/pick-up at Fuchs Pond Preserve)
